about

In late 2019/early 2020, catastrophic fires tore through the Australian bush. The sky smudged dark, the sun impossibly red; the air choked toxic with smoke. It felt like the world was ending... and in some ways, it was.
Upwards of 18.6 million hectares of precious trees & land were burned; and an estimated 3 billion animals lost their lives, as well as 34 people.

In my personal life, I was waking up. Realising I could not deny my queerness any longer, nor my transness... I was falling quickly, deeply in love; I was still wading through the grief of losing my brother & grandfather; I was choosing to live anyway; I was starting again; I was opening my eyes for what felt like the first time... while also smelling doom in the burning eucalypts that said "This is it. Climate change is here. How long do we have? What can we do? Where can we go?".

This song is an offering of water; to mourn, to heal, to atone, to remember.

'Body of Water' was written & recorded in a single session, by myself, in my swelteringly hot bedroom in Gadigal (Sydney). It is the first work I've released under the moniker Heirloome.

lyrics

Lay the water of my body
Across a hollow in the earth
Sheltering the soft ones there
Let them rise
When this is done

I'm sorry
But don't forgive me
I'm sorry
But don't forgive

Take it from me,
I know I've been greedy
Gone is the air now
We didn't think to breathe

Oil from your branches
Anoints the sea
Gone is the air now
We didn't think to breathe

Breathe
Breathe
Breathe

about

Heirloome Australia

There is a giant lily that grows, slowly, in the Himalayas. For most of its life, it appears to be an unassuming collection of heart-shaped leaves - until one day when it sprouts to 3 meters tall and unfurls in to angel-horn flowers.

For queer Australian artist Heirloome, a self-confessed ‘weird kid and late bloomer’, this flower is more than just an analogy - it’s a prophecy.
